THIS. While I always do well with juries and auditions, this is why I object them. As a future educator I realize how ridiculous this might be for certain students.
I HATE juries and auditions, but there is a reason why they are used. It’s all about performing under pressure, and practice makes perfect. And you need to be perfect in a performance industry.
While I totally understand that, a jury won’t prove if I’m going to be a good music educator or not. And to be honest, when things like this are used in high schools or middle schools they may scare away students who lack confidence or maybe just students who don’t test well in these type of assessment settings. I’ve learned in many of my education courses that students in all content areas should be assessed using various methods that can address all types of learners. I mean, I guess it’s okay for college (even though it won’t prove my competence as an educator) but when teachers use this in middle and high school as their only assessment method, some students are bound for failure (even if they don’t plan to pursue music in college). Okay, done with my rant.
Now that I agree with. I went to a performing arts high school half a day in high school, and the juries that I had to go through really helped. I do know, however, that some of the students at my regular high school wouldn’t even join the choir because of the audition to get in (and it wasn’t even a real audition. The choir teacher let anyone in) Although I complain about auditions and juries, I know it’s the right thing for me, but it definitely isn’t the right thing for everyone.
